She has ten years of experience as a freelance translator and interpreter, with special emphasis on subjects related to feminism and gender issues, international relations, the environment, political sciences, and finances. She has had the privilege of interpreting conferences given by personalities like Herb Cohen, Klaus Toepfer, Baron Wolman, Marta Lamas, Gustavo Esteva, and Don Samuel Ruiz. Her portfolio includes translation work for institutions like the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences (Flacso), the Center for Economic Research and Teaching (CIDE), the Center for Latin American Monetary Studies (CEMLA), the Center for Research and Higher Studies in Social Anthropology (CIESAS), the Ford Foundation, the National Council for Culture and Arts (Conaculta), the National Auditorium, the United Nations (UN), the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions of Canada, and the Canadian environment consultant, FiveWinds International, in addition to non-governmental and private sector organizations

In translation and interpretation, Atenea has found the ideal tools to structure her activism for human rights, gender equality and social change. She has lent her voice to groups like the Madres de las Muertas de Juárez (Mothers of the Murdered Women of Juárez), the Movimiento de los Sin Tierra (Movement of the Landless) and the Coordinación de Apoyo al Pueblo Saharaui (Support Coordination of the Saharawi Peoples). She belongs to a network of voluntary interpreters, Babels, and is part of the founding team of Babels Mexico. She has participated in the World Social Forum and coordinated the volunteer interpreter corps in the “Women and Globalization” and “Another World is Necessary” workshops organized by the Center for Global Justice. She was a guest speaker at the 4th Annual ProZ.com Conference held in Buenos Aires, Argentina in August 2006, where she delivered a presentation titled Translation and Gender, and was invited to deliver a presentation on Interpretation and Activism at Interpreta2007, a conference for interpreters organized by José Luis Villanueva Senchuk and Lucille Barnes in Buenos Aires, Argentina in July 2007. She is a proud member of Rebelión and Tlaxcala, two organizations of activist translators. She Atenea admits to being a writer with reserve and a declared feminist. She has traveled to 26 countries and lived in Mexico, the United States and the Czech Republic.
